18 Championship Road Race 2018

posted in: Club, Cycling, Results | 0

Tonight’s race was arguably the most prestigious race of the season, with Mass Start Road Races to decide the Club Championship Road Race for the season – serious and long lasting bragging rights were up for grabs. Riders are contesting not just the overall open championship in these races, but also their age group championship. This often means that races are happening within the overall race.

Thirty-one riders presented themselves to start the Men’s race, followed one minute later by twelve women and junior riders. Racing began at the Parkvale Hall and headed towards Martinborough with the women returning by the same route to Parkvale hall, whilst the men turned left to return via Pope’s Head and Millers Road. In both races the pressure was on from the start with some riders finding themselves unable to hang on to their bunch early on, whilst others suffered some bad luck with mechanicals.

In the women’s race a group of 5 riders soon found themselves out in front and catching riders who had been dropped from the men’s race. Finn and Caleb Roberts were working hard to stay with this bunch, that is until there was an attack off the front by Lesley Mouat and Belinda Fuller. The attack was quickly shut down on the descent leaving the 5 women continuing to race and turn together at Martinborough. This situation remained the same until the final two climbs close to the finish where Belinda Fuller, Lesley Mouat and Donna Burkhart put the pressure on to ride away together towards the sprint which was taken out by Donna Burkhart.

Special mention has to be made of how great it is to see our younger riders out on the course tonight, riding well and learning a lot about race-craft.

In the men’s race the pace was seriously quick right from the start with a number of riders unable to hang on. By 10 kms into the race Dan Waluszewski had attacked and was 20 seconds in front of the peloton. Dan then went into ‘Time Trial’ mode, demonstrating power, endurance and some serious speed, as he increased his lead and was not seen again until he had crossed the finish line for a decisive win. For the main peloton the climbs also proved decisive with Mark Langlands and Ben Knight also successfully slipping away off the front to set up a sprint finish for 2nd and 3rd that was taken out by Mark. There followed a series of sprint finishes as each of the following groups returned to Parkvale Hall interspersed with lone riders whose legs just wouldn’t last the distance in their groups on the final couple of climbs.

Finally, many thanks to all the race officials for keeping us safe and organised and to our social committee for organising the post race refuel!

Next Week: Is another brand new course – starting and finishing at Wainuioru School and racing to the base of the Kourarau hill and beyond.
