2-Up Time Trial

posted in: Club, Cycling, Results | 0

Twenty two teams presented themselves to contest tonight’s two-up time trial that was billed as a potential ‘team selection event’ for the (not far distant!) Hope Gibbons Team Time Trial. The 17 km event began at the bottom of Matahiwi with teams leaving at minute intervals, to ride as hard as possible over ‘false flat’ and short rises towards the summit turnaround. On an evening with blustery North West winds, the ride up the hill was never going to be an easy ride.

After the turnaround, teams looked to increase their speed and maximise the benefit of slight downhill, with cross-cutter tail-wind, not that this makes the riding any easier, it just becomes quicker with riders pushing bigger gears. The fastest teams ride close to each other’s wheels and are able to lap out smoothly without losing any speed. Where teams are slightly uneven, the stronger rider may elect to take a longer turn on the front.

All riders arrived at the finish, out of breath most with legs screaming at them to stop pushing. Teams were then rewarded with carrot-cake and marshmallows – instant energy replacement.

Special mention has to be made tonight of Team Sowry – this is the first race this season for Brent, so hopefully, as soon as we get our heads fully around the new timing system, we can see you back in the peloton on a regular basis! Congratulations tonight go to Derek Roberts and Dave Drummond, who posted the fastest overall time. Ben Knight, the only solo rider, finished a mere 4 seconds slower. Devan Simmonds and Lesley Mouat posted the fastest time amongst the mixed teams. The fastest all women team was Karen Blade and Sydney Blackburn. Fastest Junior girls were Scarlett Freeman and Kate Speedy. The sole junior boys team of Finn and Caleb Roberts posted a very creditable time, faster than quite a number of senior teams.

As always, very many thanks to the race management team for their work that allows us to race. Thanks also to the providers of instant energy at the finish line.

Reminder: Entries are now open for the Hope Gibbons Team Time Trial – sort your teams out and get the entries in.

Next Week in the final Tuesday race for the season. It is a mass start over the Kaituna course. If you did not keep your transponder from tonight – or were not issued with one tonight, please attempt to be early so one can be issued to you. All transponders are to be returned at the end of the Kaituna race. Next season each person who races will be able to hire a transponder for the season.

Francis Line, Carters Line, Hughes Line, GRR

posted in: Club, Cycling, Results | 0

Thirty-eight riders presented themselves to compete over the circuit that started and finished in Francis Line. Riders were reminded that as this was a Graded Race, they could only race against the riders in their start group, if anyone dropped out of their bunch they were not permitted to work with any group they were caught by. The full length race was over two laps, 28 km in total and the short riders completed a single lap of the course.

Groups left at two minute intervals beginning with the riders allocated into A-Grade. Tonight, due to small numbers, this group was an amalgamation of two riders who are usually A-Grade (scratch) and four riders who usually ride as B-grade (or Break). Three of the B-Graders had an especially ‘hard day at the office’ as they were dropped by the pace set by the Scratch riders over the first rise on East Taratahi Road. At the conclusion of this race, the sprint was taken out by Derek Roberts, with both Eddy Kuipers and Peter James right on his wheel.

B-Grade left at 2 minutes and managed to stay together for the entire race, despite a number of unsuccessful attacks off the front by Andy Curtis-Cody. An impressive sprint split this bunch over the top of the final rise to the finish, and was taken out by Ricky Blade, with Bill van Woerkom close behind.

C-Grade, starting at 4 minutes was a slightly larger group which also managed to stay together for the entire race. In this grade the Robert’s boys appeared to be working as a team, so that as one attacked, the other would sit up and block at the front of the bunch. Approaching the finish Finn Roberts finally managed to break the elastic for an impressive sprint up the final hill to win with clear meters of road behind him. In this bunch Donna Burkhart succeeded in posting the fastest time over the course amongst the women.

D-Grade was another slightly larger bunch at the start, but this bunch dropped a couple of riders on the first circuit. Once again it was an impressive sprint finish from this bunch that was taken out by Greg Baillie with a couple of seconds back to the tandem of Rod Sutherland and Peter Jones. Great to see David Howden back on the start line again after some months away from racing.

Finally E-Grade were the short course riders who completed a single lap of the course. This bunch experienced some significant splits and time gaps as the lap proceeded. Once again Kate Speedy was impressive in her sprint to escape and take line honours from the other tandem ridden by Doug Maclachlan and Meri Murphy.

As always, many thanks to the Race Management team. Next week is a 2-up Time Trial up Matahiwi which could be used as a Hope Gibbons team time trial selection test. Yes, now is the time to test out the legs on the TT bikes – with as much ‘bling’ as you can muster!

Finally, well done to everyone who competed at the ACM hosted interclub race last Sunday. Congratulations to Derek Roberts, the overall winner of the series. Best wishes to those who are taking on the massive challenge that is ‘The Gentle Annie’ this weekend. If you are not going to ‘Gentle Annie’ you might want to sign yourself up for some fun and social games at the Bowling Club next Saturday 23rd March. See you all there!

ACM hosted Interclub Road Race

posted in: Club, Cycling, Results | 0

In the final Interclub Road Race for the 2019 season, 26 riders presented themselves to start in almost perfect race conditions. The course took riders out onto the Bideford Road, then into the Whangaehu Valley before they turned and completed the 60 km race at the top of the first hill on Bideford Road.

Martin Grundwell charged away from the start line and his fellow riders in limit. Ten minutes later the 5 riders in Break 2 began their chase up the valley, with Break, entirely made up of Athletics and Cycling Masterton riders began another five minutes later, and Scratch a further ten minutes afterwards. Break caught Break 2 on the climb after the Dreyers Road turn off on the way out and then worked together to catch limit. But it was only after the riders had turned left into Bideford Road did that this group managed to catch Martin, who had spent a long day time trialling. Scratch closed the gap significantly but were unable to catch the now large bunch comprised of Limited, Break 2 and Break.

Many thanks to all those involved with Race Management and for lunch back at the clubrooms after the racing had finished.

Norfolk Road, MSRR

posted in: Club, Cycling, Results | 0

Forty Two riders presented themselves to the Race Manager to contest a Mass Start Road Race up Norfolk Road, just as large raindrops began to fall, not that the riders noticed that. Most riders were too busy jostling for position in the peloton and attempting to hold the wheel of the rider in front, and react to surges in speed each time one of a small number of riders attacked trying break the elastic and form a break away. Those attacks came from Simon Pumfrey, Eddy Kuipers, Erik D’Arbois and Ben Knight. Each of the attacks was rapidly closed down so about seventeen riders hung onto wheels and prevent the breakaway all the way up to the turn at the top of Norfolk Road. One rider then lost a wheel close to the turn and another at the turn itself.

But for all the other riders the damage was well and truely done with those early surges in speed. As riders get dropped it is then a case of working out if you could find other riders to form bunches to work with or whether it is time to do some Individual Time Trial training, and settle into a solo effort for the duration of the race, and hope that you don’t get caught by anyone behind you!

It was fabulous to see that both junior boys – Finn and Caleb Roberts remained in that big bunch throughout the race, to finish high in the overall results. The only woman to stay in the front bunch and contest the sprint finish was Emily Lutyens. Congratulations to Derek Roberts who took out the sprint finish just ahead of Eddy Kuipers and Simon Pumfrey on the long course. The second woman to finish, Lesley Mouat, was one the riders to end up completing an ITT. Kirsten Goodin, third woman found herself working with a small bunch to finish a few minutes down on the lead group.

For the short course riders, (who turned at the one-lane bridge) contending a Mass Start in the midst of the long course riders was something of a novelty. In this race the Junior Girls were in good form. Sydney Blackburn cleverly managed to slide her way nicely into a bunch of long course riders and stayed with them on the way out, thus managing to ride away from all the other short course riders, who had positioned themselves further back at the start. Contesting second place in a sprint finish Kate Speedy just had the edge over Scarlett Freeman.

Commiserations and Chocolate Fish award tonight to Ben Knight who was comfortably in the front bunch when he experienced a mechanical issue. Ben stopped to try and sort this out, and then rode back mainly on the grass verge on a bike that sounded rather sick.

Once again, very many thanks to the race management team and to John and Deb Allen for after-match refuelling.

Next week is a Graded Road Race around the Francis Line, Carters Line, Hughes line circuit.

PS. Don’t forget to put your entries in for Sunday’s ACM hosted Interclub race – on-line entries need to be in by Thursday. And also while you are on the website signing up to race – or offering to Marshall if you can’t race, the book yourself in for the joint social on 23rd March.

Gladstone to Mahupuku Road to Kourarau HRR

posted in: Club, Cycling, Results, Uncategorized | 0

Tonight’s offering of a 35 km Handicapped Race that began at Gladstone Church, raced south to Mahupuku Road and then turned to head north and finish at the top of the iconic Kourarau Climb attracted 44 riders. This is a demanding course that required each of the handicapped bunches to work well together over the predominantly flat and fast beginning of the course. Then it also required enough energy to be left in the tank to enable a steady but rapid climb of approximately 6 km right from the bottom to the top of the Kourarau Hill Road.

The results show that riders experienced mixed fortunes in each of the bunches. Even though Limit, and Break 2 started as the largest bunches, the Kourarau climb broke them to bits. In fact across all the start groups Kourarau was the decisive element with only a few riders able to hang onto each other’s wheels and work together on the climb. So the riders who were most successful were those with strength to ride fast on the flat, but also great hill climbing ability, combined with some grit and determination.

Congratulations tonight to Finn Roberts who started in Break 2 and managed to ride away from his bunch and catch all the riders from Limit who started 4 minutes in front of him to win the handicap race overall and be the fastest Junior Boy to complete the long course. Kirsten Goodin was the first woman to finish tonight. Ben Knight, starting in Scratch, demonstrated all the skills of strength, speed and climbing ability to be the fastest man tonight. Belinda Fuller, starting in Break was the fastest woman. Congratulations to Sydney Blackburn who out-sprinted Kate Speedy to take line honours in the short course race. I believe congratulations are due to every rider who managed to complete the course tonight, that was one massive effort by every rider.

As always, many thanks to Brent our Race Manager, and all the marshals who looked after us so well once again. Next week we return to a Mass Start Road Race up Norfolk Road, starting at the Waingawa Industrial Estate.

Full results from tonight can be found below. Finally a reminder to everyone to get your entries in for both the ACM hosted inter club which will be held on Sunday 17th March, and also to our joint social function to be held on Saturday, 23rd March.

Bideford Road, HRR

posted in: Club, Cycling, Results | 0

Tonight was billed as a 30 km Handicapped Road Race starting at the Whangehu Hall, riding north towards Bideford turning and racing back towards the start. As a handicapped road race, bunches try to work together as a team to catch any riders in front of them and stay away from riders behind. Over this particular course, keeping your start bunch together always proves to be a challenge due to the lumpy nature of the terrain and tonight’s results reflect that. Some of the riders from Break 2 were successful in the aim of catching the bunch in front whilst remaining elusive from the chasing riders behind.

Congratulations tonight go primarily to junior members of the club. Firstly, to Finn Roberts riding the long course who out-sprinted one of best sprinters in the club to win the long course race. Congratulations also to Kate Speedy, who once again lived up to her name to win the short course in a sprint finish against Jono Didsbury. On the long course, Ben Knight was the fastest man and Lesley Mouat first and fastest woman.

Unfortunately, tonight’s results also reflect that there was a coming together of a couple of cyclists in Break on a fast downhill section of the course, which resulted in a nasty crash. All the remaining riders from this bunch and also those from scratch stopped to render assistance to the injured riders, and did not then complete the remainder of the course. All these riders have been given an adjusted time. No-one ever plans to crash but when this does happen every one of us feels very grateful for the rapid and professional assistance that is given by the ambulance and emergency department of our hospital. Crashes such as the one this evening, rattle the rest of us, and remind us that there is much more to life than winning a club race. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to our injured riders, and thanks to those who stopped to help.

As always thanks to our Race Manager, who had an especially busy evening, to all the marshals, and also to those who fed us afterwards. Next week is a handicapped race starting and Gladstone church, racing south before the return to finish up Admiral hill. Full, and adjusted results for tonight are below:
