Tonight was the first of the 2017-2018 Club Championship Races. ‘Hot’ was the word for tonight’s race. The weather was hot, so was the pace of the racing and the sprints were hotly contested throughout the races. Unfortunately only three women presented themselves to the starter, so they raced alongside fifteen B-Grade men. Nineteen men contested the A-Grade men’s race.
The pace was on right from the gun in each of the races, which caught out a few riders who then had little or no hope of managing to close the gap that had opened up in front of them. Caleb Roberts found this out to his cost as did Andrew Linton.
In the first race, amongst the women, Donna proved her superior sprint power to win all but two of the sprints. Whilst in the B-grade men, Liam Moore proved the strongest, with Steve Brown in second place.
In the A-Grade men’s race, Ben Knight took a flyer right from the start, but the peloton reeled him back in for a while. It wasn’t long before four riders managed to engineer a breakaway – Ben Knight, Mark Langlands, Darren Southon and Derek Cox and Peter Jones on the tandem. This looked like a breakaway that was going all the way to the finish, however, as often happens a wheel was dropped and Ben and Mark had a gap that was never closed, and continued to grow right through to the finish. This dynamic duo continued with a demonstration of power and speed and in the process lapped many riders.
In the end we must congratulate Mark Langlands who retains his Club Championship title and also to Donna Burkhart who wins her first Club Championship Criterion title.
Next week is a graded road race over the Carrington Circuit.
