Francis Line Circuit HRR

The Francis Line circuit is a course where everyone knows they are going to have to deal with the wind from every direction as some stage on the race. Tonight, the conditions were most challenging along Hughes Line with a fairly brisk cross wind that meant riders had to battle to hold wheels. Not every rider succeeded in doing this for the duration of the race. Despite this many of the riders would have ridden their fastest 40 kms ever, or at least for some time as they completed all 3 laps.

As always in a Handicapped Road Race, each bunch attempted to reach the line first without being caught by chasing bunches. In the main race, the start groups comprised at least a dozen riders, with the exception of Mark Langlands, who was given an extra minute handicap by himself. With an exceptionally strong ‘Scratch’ Group tonight, closing that gap proved impossible. ‘Scratch’ were also unable to catch any groups ahead of them. However, ‘Break 2’ caught ‘Limit’ and ‘Break’ succeeded in catching ‘Break 2’ on the final lap just at the junction of Hughes and Francis Line which resulted in a mass bunch sprint to finish the race.

Congratulations to Phil Sutherland who outsprinted everyone and finished first, followed by Duncan Cameron in second, and Ricky Blade in third place. Belinda Fuller finished 4thand was the first woman followed on the same time by Emily Lutyens as the two fastest women. Congratulations to Derek Roberts who was the fastest man completing the race in 1 hour two minutes and 36 seconds, an impressive average speed of 40.24 kms per hour.

The short course riders completed a single lap of the circuit starting with 5 riders. Three of those riders were dropped on the circuit, with Karen Blade being outsprinted by Kate Speedy at the finish. In addition to winning the short course overall, Kate is the fastest of the Junior short course riders.

Additional congratulations tonight go to Belinda Fuller who competed at K2 and placed 3rdin her age group last weekend.

Many thanks to Di Dowding for refuelling riders with a BBQ on the finish line.  Also thanks to our trust race officials keeping us on track and safe as we race.
