Race 17 2 laps Millers Road, HRR

On one of the warmest evenings of the summer, 42 riders braved the heat and presented themselves to the starter to contest a Handicapped Road Race; 7 of those contested the shorter 1 lap course, and the remainder raced for line honours over the full 2 lap course. The aim of handicapping racing is for all the handicap groups to reach the finish at the same time and thus be able to sprint for line honours (and bragging rights). The handicapper sets each of the groups off at a time they have calculated should achieve this. The job of the riders in each of the groups is to work together to try and close the gap to the group in front of you and at the same time stay away from the chasing group. Tonight this proved impossible because of the toll the heat took on the riders, with a very high number abandoning after just 1 lap.

The story of tonight’s race begins with the two man breakaway of Madi Hartley-Brown and Tom McCallum who used their youth and superior climbing ability to succeed in riding off the front of scratch (the fastest group). Once over the Millers Road climb. Madi and Tom working together put even greater distance into scratch and quickly caught ‘break’ (next fastest group). As they raced past this group, only Devan Simmonds managed to hook onto the back of the young riders. Eventually the recent lack of training miles caught up with Tom and he was unable to continue at the pace of Madi and Devan.

It was these two riders who succeed in passing all the groups on the road. so tonight bragging rights for the full course go to our visiting rider, Madi Hartley-Brown. Madi is one of New Zealand’s rising cycling stars and a name to watch out for in the future. Bragging rights also go to Devan, who had a fantastic ride tonight – he puts this down to working outside all of the time, so he is conditioned to the warm weather, unlike many who have been hiding in air-conditioned offices and homes!

Amongst the women bragging rights go to Emily Lutyens, who proved tonight that she HAS been training, and is beginning to get back to fitness and fulfil her potential. The fastest woman tonight, once again was Belinda Fuller who is proving herself a force to be reckoned with.

For the Short Course riders, another familiar name was prominent -the youngest rider in tonight’s race – Caleb Roberts was also the fastest and first across the line, followed not very far behind by Sydney Blackburn, the youngest woman rider. In this race Sydney thought Caleb had begun his sprint a bit early, let him go and paid the price! She now knows he is a very determined young rider with a great sprint finish!

Next week: Club Championship Road Race starting at Parkvale Hall and racing towards Martinborough.
